Tea origin and history

Tea has its origins in China. Legend has it that in 2737 BC, Shen Nung, who was the emperor of China and inventor of Chinese medicine and agriculture, was having a bowl of boiled water under a tree since it was a requirement for his subjects to bring their water to a boil before drinking it. As he was drinking the water, some leaves from a nearby tree, known as Camellia sinensis, fell into the water.

They changed its color and gave it a pleasant aroma. The emperor decided to try the resulting mixture and was pleased with the taste. Its healing properties and unique flavor made it a favorite in China. It, later on, spread to Japan when Japanese monks who came to China to study tasted it and took it back to their country.

In Japan, the tea leaves were ground into fine powder using stone mills and this became the preferred way of taking it. It was not until in 1368 when the Ming Dynasty came into power that a new method of brewing tea emerged. Instead of grinding them, the leaves were dried, rolled then heated, and steeped in hot water.

Tea spread to other parts of the world, with some choosing to include milk and sugar, while others preferred using tea bags to tea leaves. All over the world, the health benefits of tea have been embraced openly and have made it a top beverage.
