What is Moonlight White Tea?

"Yue Guang Bai cha" is translated to Moonlight White, this is a tea originating from China and found in the Yunnan Province. The loose-leaftea, although white in colour is sometimes classified as a black tea. Moonlight White Tea, is a semi-oxidised tea, it’s production process, differs from the oolongs, so this would never be classified as an oolong. Moonlight White Tea, can be sold in compressed cakes like Pu-erh. Moonlight White Tea is grown from the long -leafed Assamica Cultivar, the leaves are covered with silver hair. The tea is classified as a white tea as the production involves withering and drying. The Moonlight White Tea, gets its name from the process of withering the leaves at night rather than during the day.


How is Moonlight White Tea Produced?

To produce Moonlight White Tea, the buds are picked between March and April, around 4-5 am. The buds get a lot of moisture from the dew, that comes down in the mountain fog, and therefore, Moonlight White Tea, is fresher and of a higher quality than any other picked during any other season, the large leaf size means that the withering and air-drying production method, the tea has greater levels of oxidation and is darker in colour than white teas, that are made from smaller leafed plants. Once picked the buds are placed in the sun at sunrise. In some areas, Moonlight White Tea growers, attempt to time their processing so that it happens under the full moon, as it is believed that the moon contains special powers. To brew the Moonlight White tea, to its best flavour, a gaiwan of glass pitcher should be used to brew the tea, the use of a standard teapot is not recommended as these retain heat. The process of making the perfect cup of Moonlight White Tea is in the brewing. Never use boiling water as this will ruin the delicate flavour. The ideal temperature of your water should be between 170 and 185 degrees Fahrenheit, or 76 to 85 degrees Celsius. When the water is at the preferred temperature, let the water rest for one minute and gently pour over the leaves. The tea brewing time, gradually increases with each infusion. If brewing in a western style teacup or teapot, the water temperature is reduced to 165 degrees Fahrenheit and the brewing time can vary between 1 to 5 minutes.


How many types of Moonlight White Tea are there? 

 

Moonlight White Tea does have different types, depending on which Region in Yunnan, they come from. There is the Jing Mai Moonlight White Tea, which is a loose-leaf tea and come from Lancang. The second types is called Nightlife 2017, this is a compressed Moonlight white tea.  There is the more traditional Yue Guang Bai, Moonlight White tea, which is the most commonly available.  The Ancient Moonlight White is also a loose tea. The Bai Beeng, Moonlight White tea, is a tea cake and as such compressed. All are reported to be very delicate in flavour.


The perfect time to drink a cup of Moonlight White tea is to drink it outside a full moon, reports say drinking it under the moon when it’s full will change your life. For full health benefits the team should be drunk daily and many experts do recommend drinking it in the morning at the start of the day, to help feel the benefits and to help relieve the stress of the day. 

Other experts argue that drinking Moonlight White Tea, is on an evening to help your body to relax after a tough day.
